Homemade Deer Repellent Recipes and Solutions
Homemade Deer Repellent Solutions
While deer are very beautiful and graceful creatures, their presence can spell disaster for your garden. Deer are notorious for nibbling on any edible vegetation, and can quickly destroy years of gardening work if they get onto your property.
Keeping deer away from your garden and yard is a challenge faced by many rural homeowners, resulting in a variety of homemade deer repellent recipes being developed - using various methods to frighten or deter deer. Our Deer Repellent Packs in addition to the solutions shown below provide a great combination strategy to keep deer away from your yard, garden, bushes and trees.
Homemade deer repellent using odor and taste
Many of the most popular homemade deer repellent recipes are based on the smell of rotten eggs and the harsh taste of pepper and/or garlic. Deer find this smell unpleasant, and can detect it for a time after it is no longer noticeable for humans. The essential recipe includes raw eggs mixed in water, but many people add things like garlic and hot peppers for further effectiveness. Some specific recipes are included below:
Homemade Deer Repellent - Recipe 1:
3 raw eggs
3 tbls. of red hot sauce
3 tbls. of garlic juice or minced
Add enough water to a blender to process and mix well. Add this to a gallon of water and spray on plants.
Homemade Deer Repellent - Recipe 2:
1/2 cup milk
1 Tablespoon of cooking oil
1 Tablespoon of dish soap
Add 1 gallon of water and shake well. Spray or sprinkle on plants every two weeks or after heavy rain.
Homemade Deer Repellent - Recipe 3:
1 or 2 garlic cloves, smashed or minced
1 tablespoon of yogurt or milk
Mix in a gallon jug, and pour a little on your plants.
Spray the mixture straight to the leaves of plants you wish to protect. Adding dish soap to the mix can extend its life somewhat, making the solution adhere to leaves of plants a bit better. Though the recipes are relatively easy, they are not a fully set-it-and-forget method. Most any kind of spray-on will need to be reapplied at least every couple of weeks or after hard rains.
Other Homemade Deer Repellents:
Other odors that have been used to attempt to repel deer include human hair, deodorant soap, and some types of blood meal or bone meal (organic or untreated brands that retain their smell). These ingredients can be put in small bags - nylon stockings work well – and hung around the perimeter of your garden (replacing monthly) at the same height as a deer's snout. Simple instructions for creating a bloodmeal and hair deer repellent solution are below:
1 yard of old sheeting, cotton, or muslin
1/4 cup bloodmeal
1 cup of hair clippings
Cut the fabric into small 4-inch squares. Mix the bloodmeal and hair together and place about a tablespoon onto the center of each square. Bring up the ends and secure with a string or rubber band. Hang these little packets from the branches of the trees and shrubs.
Homemade Deer Scare Devices
Sound/Motion Based Deterrents
Deer can be frightened and unusual sights or sounds can be enough to scare them away. A simple scare technique is to take strips of Mylar and attach them to poles placed around your garden. Mylar is highly reflective and makes a lot of noise when moving, so strips of Mylar blowing in the wind will often help to deter deer.
More advanced techniques involve the use of motion detectors, sprayers or timers, triggering things like water sprays, flashing lights, or loud noises when a deer is near. There are certain devices that produce ultrasonic sounds (inaudible to humans) that will repel deer – these are often used on vehicles and can be easily set up for motion-activation in your garden, as an alternative to loud noise.
Over time, deer tend to become accustomed to these scare devices, so you'll need to rotate the method used regularly.
Homemade deer repellent using barriers
Surrounding your garden or each tree with cobblestones is a popular deer repellent method, as deer dislike walking where they don't have sure footing and solid ground beneath them. While that method is unlikely to stop a hungry deer by itself, its presence will put the deer on edge – making the other devices you have set up more effective.
Tree wraps are another good option to keep deer away from trees. Deer enjoy rubbing their antlers against tree trunks, and often cause more damage to your trees doing this than they do eating the leaves (especially in young trees that haven't yet developed thick bark). Chicken wire or mesh fencing work well as tree wraps, a couple of layers of either wrapped around the trunk will deter deer from approaching. Just make sure you allow enough room to not hinder the growth of young trees, particularly in spring.
If you decide to implement any of these homemade deer repellent recipes, it is best to combine and rotate your methods – this will keep the deer on their toes and make sure they don't learn to ignore your repellents.
