Effective Deer Repellent Strategies for Large Orchards and Plots

Hungry Deer Target Orchards, Vineyards and Crop Lands

There are many threats to a successful growing season - including bad weather, rodents, and insects – that farmers must be on guard against constantly. Deer can also do considerable damage to orchards and farms. As they search for food, these strong and insistent creatures can move past many obstacles in an effort to find their next meal. While homeowners in residential areas can usually deal with deer invasions using simple repellent methods, these are not always effective for farmers who have to contend with significantly greater deer pressure. What deer repellent strategies are best for large orchards and farms?

Deer Fencing

Perimeter deer fencing specifically designed to keep deer out is necessary for any large orchard or farm that is suffering a loss due to deer invasions. However, not just any fence will be effective. Deer are strong and stubborn, which means that they can find their way through most basic fencing systems. Combining the physical barrier of a fence design proven to keep deer out with the psychological barrier of electric fencing is extremely effective. A two common deer fencing methods are:

Peanut Butter Fence

  • Ideal for: Orchards and Gardens up to 4 acres
  • Withstands: Moderate Deer Pressure

The peanut butter fence attracts deer to the shocking elements of an electric fence. Peanut butter is applied to the wire either directly or with adhesive tape strips. When deer come in contact with the peanut butter, most likely with their nose, they receive an electric shock. Peanut butter swatches should be applied to the fence about every 6 feet and maintained weekly.

Three-Dimensional Electric Fencing

  • Ideal for: Large Orchards and Farms
  • Withstands: Moderate to Heavy Deer Pressure (depending on design)

There are several types of three-dimensional electric fencing which farmers and growers have been able to use successfully to thwart deer infiltration. One example is offset or double fencing which uses two separate fencing lines offset at distances of 4-5 feet. Another is vertical deer fencing. This design makes it difficult for deer to either crawl under or jump over the fencing. A slanted seven-wire fence can be bit more costly than the other designs, but it is especially effective in defending orchards from heavy deer pressure.

Perimeter Deer Repellents

Even after installing an excellent fencing system, there is still the possibility that deer will get through and into your farm or orchard. Using deer repellents around the perimeter of your property will decrease the likelihood that deer make it past your fence.

One excellent repellent product is Deer Repellent Packs. They are small packets that contain odor producing granules which repel deer with the scent of predator urine. The installation process is easy since you can hang the packets directly on your fence posts. They require minimal maintenance since their effectiveness is not diminished by rain or snow and last for up to 90 days.

If deer are getting into your orchard or farm, you need to take action to keep them out. Combining a good fencing system with effective deer repellents will help defend your crops and ensure a successful growing season.
