While property owners with smaller plots in more densely populated areas can suffer damage caused by deer, no properties are at greater risk to deer damage than large plots in sparsely populated areas. Basic borders such as walls and fences can help keep your property clear of deer damages, there are plenty of other strategies to implement that can save your property. Consider the following options for keeping your property deer damage free:
Install a barrier
– As stated above, sometimes a simple wall or fence around the entirety of a property is enough to reduce or eliminate all deer from the area. While these simple solutions can be effective, large properties drive up the cost of installation and maintenance for barriers, especially in environments with harsh winters. Remember that fences installed to deter the presence of deer should be at least 8 feet tall, which is taller than some municipalities allow.
Let animals, especially dogs, roam
– This strategy is harder for commercial property owners, but residential owners with large plots can allow their canine friends to wander their property to reduce the risk of deer damage to the property. Similar to a maintained human presence around the property, the scent of canines registers as a threat to deer, driving them away. There is also conflicting evidence that outdoor cats are able to repel deer when their scent is spread around properties.
Use light/sound repellents
– In recent years there has been an uptick in the effectiveness of ultrasonic repellents. Sound-based repellents release regular sounds at certain frequencies which humans cannot hear, but deer find unpleasant, keeping them pushed out of the area. Due to their skittish nature, deer can also be repelled by motion-activated light traps which release a sudden, bright light. These options are less attractive across large plots due to the need for maintenance and close proximity to each other in order to be fully effective.
Wrap your trees – Properties with little-to-know shrubbery or flowery plants, but plenty of trees, can keep deer damage low but making those trees inaccessible to deer. Wrapping the first few feet of tree trunks will reduce the edibility of said arbor to deer, especially when bark becomes a regular part of the deer diet towards the winter months. This method also requires the trimming of lower branches, eliminating the ability for deer to reach leaves for their meals.
Deer Repellent Packs – Deer Repellent Packs are a scent-based, naturally-derived repellent which have been proven effective against deer problems of all sizes. Because the packs are full of a concentration of ethically-harvested coyote urine, deer are repelled from the area with great haste, even if they have built something of a home in the area. Simply open the packs and install them every 10 to 20 feet along the property line and watch as deer avoid your property for good.
